 Rebecca Örtman

Rebecca Örtman is educated in directing with a master’s degree in screenwriting for young people at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Stockholm. Freelance director and screenwriter who works for several theaters such as the Sweden’s National Touring Theatre, The Royal dramatic theater in Stockholm and theaters throughout the country.
Rebecca is also active as a musical theater and opera director, most recently 2024 for Västmanland’s theater with the performance Ögonblicket and Maskerad for Malmö Opera in Sweden.
During the years 2009 -2019 she worked as artistic director and founder for RATS Theater with several productions that included professionals artist as well as young people.
One of her early works “Antigone in Husby” is shown today at the permanent exhibition at the The Performing Arts Museum in Stockholm. In 2020, Rebecca had the City of Stockholm’s Culture reward for her work as artistic director and writer of RATS Teater.
She also has commissions as a dramaturg for Swedish television and work as a guest teacher in directing at Nordic writing schools. Wrote and directed the short film LIV with support from the Swedish Film Institute. The short film LIV won the gold prize at the international Kinodiseea children’s film festival Bukarest 2017
Rebecca Örtman’s manuscript often deal with existential themes and with characters fighting for their inherent freedom and imagination.
Some of her plays have been translated into English, Spanish. As well as Polish by Dominica Gorecka.
Since 2020 Rebecca is the artistic director and founder of Dramaqueen, which produces filmed readings of newly written drama.
Right now she is working on writing a youth film with initial support from the Swedish Film Institute.
