Hilma and Anna are students at an art school for young girls. The school enforces strict discipline, requiring a rigorous lifestyle and full commitment. The most important things are art and spiritual development. When Hilma makes contact with mysterious High Masters and finds her own creative path, her friendship with Anna is put to the test. They must decide how far they are willing to go in the name of art, and whether they are prepared to sacrifice their friendship and risk losing control over their lives.
“Hilma and Anna” is a play for elementary school students, inspired by the lives of two artists: Hilma af Klint and Anna Cassel. The performance tells a story of friendship, the search for one’s path, and how far one can go in pursuing their vocation. Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist who, throughout her life from 1862 to 1944, created almost entirely in secrecy. She dedicated her life to art and spiritualism, despite being a practicing Christian. She closely collaborated with artist Anna Cassel, using the technique of automatic drawing and participating in spiritual séances to communicate with the spirit world. She left behind more than a thousand works with the note that they should not be shown until at least twenty years after her death. Today, Hilma af Klint’s works are exhibited worldwide, her name has become a brand, and books, films, podcasts, operas, and theater performances have been made based on her life story.
