A story about the power of discovering love and self-belief.

Loss affects everyone, but not everyone knows how to acknowledge and accept it. This is also true for the characters in Frances H. Burnett’s The Secret Garden, who deal with the loss of their loved ones in various ways. Mr. Craven isolates himself completely from the world, while Mary Lenox throws herself into life with tireless and uncompromising energy. Speaking about loss is difficult, as it has many shades. So, can one only cope with it by opening up to new relationships? How do the characters in The Secret Garden manage to regain hope and faith in their own strength?

The production at Teatr Zagłębia is a kind of remix and recycling of this classic work. Using diverse artistic tools (contemporary music, video art, performance), it reinterprets the stories and themes contained in the novel. It critically examines them and reflects on how our views on physicality, what we consider normal, and nature itself have evolved over the years. This is The Secret Garden merged with music, children’s expression, and the experiences of people with alternative motor skills. It is an invitation not only to explore a colorful, rich, and diverse landscape. We want to play together in the newly discovered secret garden as well as transform it according to our own rules.

The script of the play is based on Frances H. Burnett’s The Secret Garden, translated by Jadwiga Włodarkiewicz, and actor improvisations.

The performance includes an excerpt from Maria Reimann’s text Don’t Be a Child.

The premiere of The Secret Garden took place during the 13th Contemporary Music Festival for Children, Mała Warszawska Jesień.
